New Year Message

Each year I make a bookmark and my theme this year is unity. Everything in our world evolved from common origins. Travelling upwards from particles, hydrogen the simplest atom is formed; hydrogen atoms marshalled by gravity become a star. Stars manufacture other atoms that organise to make proteins and then cells. All of life including ginkgo trees and people follows, then teacups and rocket pencils. Each new thing has potential to affect those that might come after and things already existing. It is a picture of potential, contingency and emergence.

Exactly fifty years ago, Louise and Alexander Calder published this artwork in the New York Times. It is striking in its message which seems more poignant than ever.
